A deputy approached the vehicle and found Russell asleep behind the wheel. The deputy knocked on the window, but Russell did not wake up. The deputy called for backup, according to the report. The deputy and an Edinburgh police officer knocked on the window again and Russell woke up, but was disoriented and ignored their com- mands to exit the vehicle, the report said. They eventually got him out of the car.
When they opened the side door, they imme- diately smelled burnt marijuana and found marijuana laying on the floor, according to the report. The deputy also found a plastic baggie in left front pants pocket that contained less than 30 grams of marijuana, and a plastic bindle that contained 6.9 grams of a white powder that later tested positive for methamphetamine. In right front pants pocket, the deputy found another small baggie of suspected mari- juana, the report said. Inside the car, the deputy found a small plastic bindle that con- tained a 1.2 gram rock of crack cocaine, and an- other plastic baggie that contained 6.4 grams of methamphetamine. The deputy also found more marijuana, small cigars and a new, unopened clear smoking pipe, ac- cording to the report.
Russell was taken by ambulance to Johnson Memorial Hospital to be evaluated, then to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $5,500 bond. cHaRgES (conTinued froM Page a1) IndIanapolIs BusIness Journal A prominent Indianapolis surgeon is suing Indiana University and Indiana University Health, claiming they broke his contract and inter- fered with his ability to get another job. Dr. Rajiv Sood filed suit March 4 in Indiana Commercial Court, claiming breach of contract, tor- tious interference with employment relationships and tortious interfer- ence with a contract. IU Health declined to comment on the lawsuit.
The medical school did not immediately respond to questions from IBJ. Sood worked as professor of plastic surgery at IU School of Medicine and was medical director of the Fairbanks Burn Center at Es- kenazi Health from the early 1990s until he was fired in February 2018. According to the complaint, IU director of plastic surgery sent an email to multiple people associated with the hospital system, the medical school and Eskenazi Medical Group, one day after the termination, which said that ef- fective immediately, no student, resident or fellow could have any official contact with Sood the course of clinical care or academic On April 16, 2018, the medical school dismissed Sood and stripped him of his tenure and full professor- ship, effective Aug. 30. In 2018, IU Health the medical school demanded that Eskenazi remove Sood from his position as director of the burn unit and terminate his employment, ac- cording to the complaint. In 2019, IU Health, the medical school and Eskenazi were nego- tiating the terms of a Burn Unit transition plan, under which Sood would voluntarily step down as di- rector of the Eskenazi Burn Unit no later than 2025, and then serve as associate director of the Burn Unit afterward. Sood fully expected that his employment at Eskenazi would continue at least through 2025, if not later, under the terms of the transi- tion the complaint said. On Sept. 22, 2020, Eskenazi fired Sood without cause.
